All About Power Kites

Kitesurfing has become increasingly popular in recent years, as adrenaline junkies continue merging their sports and equipment.  A kitesurfing kite (also known as a traction kite) is essentially a large kite designed to provide significant pull to full grown men (or woman), and depending on the make and model can easily pull a man over 200 pounds.  These kites come in a few different models: foil kites, supported leading edge kits, and leading edge inflatable kites.  The kites are either soft single kite skins or rigid framed kites.

To control the flight and direction of the kitesurfing kite, there are a number of control systems; generally consisting of two to five lines, with the power kite controller using either a bar or individual handles.  The sport can be seen on both land and water, in the water you will see people using kiteboards.  On land, it can be done literally anywhere.  People kite buggy on light weight all terrain 3 wheelers, kite landboard on all terrain and mountain landboards, kite skate on roller blades, snowkite on skis or snowboards, kitejump using a power kite for base jumping, and kiteboating on small boats.  There is also kite “man lifting,” where a harnessed power kite user is moored to the ground and one or more people provide lift and tension.

A kite powered boat named “Jacob’s Ladder” set the C class world sailing speed record, recorded at 25 knots in 1982.  In 2008 a kiteboard was the first sailing vessel to be measured at speeds of over 50 knots.

Power kites range in size from 14 to 549 square feet, and the model of the power kite varies based on terrain type (land or water), power and maneuverability.  Recently, scientists have tested kites to generate electricity to be fed into a power grid using the same concepts as windmills.  Kites can reach higher altitudes than stationary windmills, so wind power would always be accessible if we can tap into winds from the jet stream and other constant wind patterns.  The only negative to ground level wind turbines is that often there is no wind…
